The Technical Assistance provided under NESOI Plus builds directly on the experience and achievements of the original H2020 NESOI project. During the first phase, NESOI successfully mobilised tailored support for islands across Europe, helping them structure and accelerate their clean energy transition. Through two Open Calls, the project engaged a wide range of territories and technologies: the first call funded 28 projects across 40 islands in 10 countries, while the second call selected 12 additional initiatives, involving 19 islands across 9 European countries. These projects covered diverse renewable energy sectors, from solar, wind, tidal and biomass, to hydrogen technologies, e‑boats, geothermal solutions, and energy system upgrade, representing different levels of readiness, from early conceptual design to deployment.

This significant and diverse portfolio provided NESOI with deep insight into the technical, financial, and organisational challenges faced by islands in developing energy projects. It also validated a robust methodological approach and the “Investment Concept” model that helped local actors progress from ideas to structured, investor‑aligned project proposals.

Building on this solid foundation, NESOI Plus aims to transfer and adapt the NESOI experience to the context of the EU Outermost Regions, where Energy Communities face additional complexities linked to remoteness, higher costs, limited technical capacity, and evolving regulatory conditions. The Technical Assistance in NESOI Plus is therefore conceived as a direct continuation and improvement of what worked well in NESOI, while responding more specifically to the needs of the Canary Islands, the Azores and Martinique.

Through NESOI Plus, its services will accompany local groups and institutions in transforming Energy Community concepts into mature, investment‑ready solutions by combining technical analysis, business modelling, and financial guidance. The lessons learned from the previous Open Calls ensure that the support is practical and grounded in real project experience.

Furthermore, the upcoming two new Open Calls of NESOI Plus will extend these benefits to 30 new beneficiary projects, allowing the refined assistance model to be applied to concrete cases and generating new examples that can be replicated across other island territories.

Overall, NESOI Plus Technical Assistance seeks to accelerate the development of well‑designed, bankable Energy Community projects while empowering local actors with the skills and confidence needed to manage and replicate such initiatives over time.
